Call to the Nicaraguan citizens after local elections

Managua, Nicaragua, 09 November 2008

CALL TO THE NATION

In light of the sad and regrettable events currently taking place, arising from justifiable doubts surrounding the preliminary results of this highly irregular electoral process, and which have deteriorated into a major governance crisis in which Nicaragua’s Supreme Electoral Council (Consejo Supremo Electoral) appears to have been reduced to mere party politics:

1. The Board of Directors of Ética y Transparencia (a Transparency International national chapter), and its network of 30,000 courageous volunteers, regret being witness to the engineering of the least transparent and most conflictive electoral process in the country’s recent history, the consequences of which they have long warned against.

2. Ética y Transparencia calls on the Government of the Republic and the Supreme Electoral Council to abandon party politics and to assume their patriotic duty by providing citizens with the true results of the municipal elections, thus assuring the peace and well being of its people.

3. Though time is short, there is still an opportunity to avoid a situation that would be unprecedented in its magnitude and repercussions, and lead to further grief and impoverishment in our already suffering Nicaragua.
