The TI Secretariat in Berlin is seeking a highly motivated intern for the External Resources Department
Transparency International (TI) is the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption. Through more than 90 chapters worldwide and an international secretariat in Berlin, Germany, TI raises awareness of the damaging effects of corruption and works with partners in government, business and civil society to develop and implement effective measures to tackle it.
Description of Internship:
Main function: Assisting the External Resources Department
Starting Date: September 2008
Duration: Six months; full time Monday to Friday

Location: Berlin, Germany
The External Resources Department of Transparency International is seeking to fill an internship position as soon as possible after 1 September. The Internship is planned for six months, with a review after the first two months.
University students or recent graduates, preferably of Communications, social sciences disciplines or Economics are invited to apply. Prospective interns should have some knowledge of and a considerable interest in, the fight against corruption, as well as in public relations and fundraising work.
The External Resources Department is responsible for fundraising and donor management for the TI Secretariat in Berlin. We sit at the centre of the organisation, having strong relationships with all of the geographical, thematic research and communications teams in the Secretariat.
The internship will focus on:
- identifying potential fundraising prospects (research and organization)
- assisting in the management of databases and spreadsheets (gathering, compiling and updating in-house information)
- maintaining the printed archive
- assisting in managing established donor relations (phone, email and written correspondence)
Requirements:
- Strong written and spoken English. Further language skills are an asset.
- Strong organisation and communication skills
- Strong research capacities
- Experience and excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel, as well as good knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications.
- Very good people skills, dedication, and the ability to contribute fully to the workings of the department.
- Prior office experience is essential.

Internship in Policy and Research Department
The TI Secretariat in Berlin is seeking a highly motivated intern for the POLICY AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENT

Description of Internship
Main function: Assist the research, analysis, organisational and administrative work of the team on a variety of corruption related themes.
Dates: 29 September to 29 December 2008.
Duration: Three months; full time Monday to Friday. Possibility of extension.
Remuneration: EUR 300 net per month for non-sponsored candidates.
Location: Berlin, Germany
Key responsibilities:
The successful candidate will provide key support to the Policy and Research Department based in TI’s global secretariat in Berlin, Germany. The department leads the organisation’s advocacy work on anti-corruption, coordinating a range of complementary policy and research products and activities. Specific initiatives include the production of corruption measurement tools, such as the Corruption Perceptions Index, the Bribe Payers Index, the Global Corruption Barometer and National Integrity System Country Studies. The department’s intern will be asked to perform key tasks, including:
- Contributing to research and advocacy activities required for the production and publishing of TI’s working and policy position paper series (including asset recovery, climate change and sustainable development).
- Providing substantive and administrative assistance to the Global Corruption Report 2009 on private sector and corruption.
- Conducting and contributing to quantitative and qualitative analysis on anti-corruption indices, indicators and monitoring systems, including the production of graphs and databases that draw on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), Global Corruption Barometer and Bribe Payer’s Index (BPI).
- Assisting the U4 Helpdesk (www.transparency.org/policy_research/u4_helpdesk) with research as needed to respond to demand-driven queries.
- Providing research assistance to the process of refining the methodology of the National Integrity Systems country studies.
- Supporting department administrative work on related policy and research events, workshops and activities.
- Backing up team on preparations for the International Anti-Corruption Conference (www.13iacc.org).
Requirements:
- Advanced university degree in public policy, international law, international studies, development economics or a related social science field.
- Some background in current anti-corruption discourse, policies and players.
- Previous experience working on higher level research and/or advocacy activities with a think tank or non governmental organization.
- Strong research and writing skills; editing experience preferred
- Familiarity with carrying out quantitative research and analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, independently and balancing multiple tasks.
- Excellent spoken and written English. French and/or Spanish language an asset

Internship in the Africa and Middle East Department
The TI Secretariat in Berlin is seeking a highly motivated, pro-active intern to support its work in the Africa and the Middle East Department.

Description of Internship
Main function: Assisting the Africa / Middle East department in their work
Starting Date: 01 September 2008
Duration: Three months (full time required)
Location: Berlin, Germany
Key responsibilities:
- Contribute pro-actively to the reorganization and expansion of the department’s projects database and online presentation of projects and activities; development of projects factsheets; update AFME website
- Contribute pro-actively to the development of an “Office procedures and templates” manual for the AFME department
- Reorganize and expand the department’s contact details database
- Correspond with national groups and chapters on these and other issues
- As needed, assist with preparations for travel bookings and arrangements for the department’s staff members or national chapters members
- Other administrative tasks and support to the Africa/Middle East Department
Knowledge, experience and skills:
- Basic university degree expected (Bachelor, Vordiplom, Licence, etc.)
- Fluency in either English or French; very good knowledge of the other language (written and spoken)
- Some prior office experience, good knowledge of MS Office applications including proven experience of working with Word and Excel
- Some knowledge of, and considerable interest in, the work of TI and the field of good governance
- Knowledge of, or proven interest in, the Africa and Middle East region

Key responsibilities:
- Assist the preparation of TI’s international Annual Membership Meeting (scheduled to take place in Athens, Greece, in late October 2008).
- Support the Unit’s work in reviewing TI's internal governance
- Assist in correspondence with TI partners throughout the world.
Knowledge, experience and skills:
- Excellent English
- Greek and / or German as an advantage
- Solid computer skills (e-mail, MS Word and MS Excel)
- Prior office experience is required
- Experience in conference / event organising as an advantage
